The Couvent des Jacobins is defined by its massive, austere brick exterior and a seven-story octagonal bell tower that rises above the historic center of Toulouse. Built starting in twelve thirty, this former Dominican monastery is a signature of Southern French Gothic architecture. Inside, the church is best known for a structural feat: a single, oversized column supporting the vaulted ceiling in the choir, with ribs radiating outward like the fronds of a palm tree.
