The Donjon du Capitole is defined by its thick, defensive walls of local red brick and a distinct Flemish-style bell tower that rises above the surrounding Square Charles de Gaulle. Completed in fifteen thirty, the structure was built to serve as a fortified archive for the Capitouls, the municipal magistrates who governed Toulouse for centuries. Beyond housing important city records, the tower served as a high-security storage site for the city's gunpowder.
