Place Pie is identifiable by the vast, vertical green garden covering the north wall of the indoor market hall at its center. This square occupies the site where the prominent residence of Jean-Perrin Parpaille once stood during the sixteenth century. Parpaille was a high-ranking official and dean of the University of Avignon who eventually converted to Protestantism. After his execution for heresy in fifteen sixty-two, the city ordered the complete destruction of his house, leaving only debris in its wake.
