The Städel Museum is recognizable by the prominent neo-Renaissance facade that rises along the south bank of the Main River, part of Frankfurt's famous Museum Embankment. Established in eighteen fifteen by the banker and spice merchant Johann Friedrich Städel, it holds the title of Germany's oldest museum foundation. Städel bequeathed his house, his private art collection, and his entire fortune to create a public institution that would both preserve art and train future artists.
