Alte Oper

The Alte Oper rises over the Opernplatz with a grand, thirty-four-meter-high Renaissance Revival facade. You can recognize it by the imposing, ornate stone exterior that hides a modern concert hall interior. Originally opened in eighteen eighty, the building was financed by sixty-seven wealthy citizens of Frankfurt. When Kaiser Wilhelm the First attended the opening, he was so struck by its scale and opulence that he remarked he could not permit himself such luxury in Berlin.
