Albertinum (1884-87; Adolph Canzler)

The Albertinum is marked by its heavy sandstone façade and a design that blends Renaissance Revival architecture with the thick, grounded walls of the former royal arsenal it once was. You can identify the building by its robust, fortress-like proportions which house the Sculpture Collection and the New Masters Gallery today. Originally constructed in the sixteenth century as a military armory, the structure was fundamentally transformed between eighteen eighty-four and eighteen eighty-seven by the architect Karl Adolf Canzler to serve as a public museum for the Kingdom of Saxony.
