Secundogenitur

The Secundogenitur is a light-colored, neo-Baroque building distinguished by its copper mansard roof and ionic columns framing the entrance. Positioned along Brühl’s Terrace, it occupies a narrow space between the promenade and the street behind it. Constructed between eighteen ninety-six and eighteen ninety-seven by the architect Gustav Frölich, the building was designed to serve as a private residence and library for Prince Johann Georg, the second-born son of the Saxon royal family. The name itself reflects this royal inheritance practice, as the Latin term refers to the provision made for a second son.
