Coselpalais (1762-64, Julius Heinrich Schwarze)

The Coselpalais is defined by twelve stone sculptures of children perched along the gate entrance, details crafted by the sculptor Johann Gottfried Knöffler that remain highlights of Saxon Baroque. This five-story residential palace stands in the shadow of the Frauenkirche, rising from the remains of two buildings commissioned in the mid-eighteenth century. Friedrich August von Cosel, an infantry general and son of King Augustus the Strong, purchased these structures in seventeen sixty-two and commissioned architect Julius Heinrich Schwarze to integrate them into a singular, grand residence.
