The Zwinger is defined by its series of richly decorated pavilions and curved galleries that encircle a vast, central courtyard. Commissioned by Augustus the Strong in seventeen oh nine, this baroque complex was designed by architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and sculptor Balthasar Permoser. While the name Zwinger historically refers to the defensive space between two city walls, this site was built as a grand venue for court festivities, tournaments, and an orangery.
