Johanneum (1872-76; Karl Moritz Haenel)

The Johanneum is a sixteenth-century Renaissance structure characterized by a long, arcaded facade known as the Langer Gang, or long corridor. Built between fifteen eighty-six and fifteen ninety by architect Paul Buchner, it originally served as the Stallgebäude, the elite stables for the nearby Dresden Castle. The ground floor once housed over one hundred horses in stalls decorated with spectacular paintings, while the upper levels contained armories and collections for the Saxon court.
