The Brühlscher Garten occupies the eastern end of the elevated promenade known as the Brühlsche Terrasse. This garden sits on the site of the former Jungfernbastei, a sixteenth-century defensive bastion that once protected the city. In seventeen thirty-nine, Count Heinrich von Brühl, the minister to King Augustus the Strong, commissioned the architect Johann Christoph Knöffel to transform these military ramparts into a private, aristocratic garden.
