Heptapyrgion of Thessaloniki

The Heptapyrgion of Thessaloniki is a polygonal fortress located at the northeastern corner of the city's acropolis, easily identified by its ten massive stone towers. Though its name translates from both Greek and Ottoman Turkish as the Fortress of Seven Towers, this is a misnomer, as ten towers remain standing today. It served for centuries as a vital redoubt for the city’s garrison commander, anchoring the defensive walls that were significantly reinforced during the late Byzantine period.
