The Holy Church of Saint Demetrius is a five-aisled basilica constructed over the ruins of an ancient Roman bathhouse. It is distinguished by the nine Byzantine mosaic panels that survived the catastrophic city fire of nineteen seventeen, which are displayed on the pillars near the sanctuary. This site honors Saint Demetrius, a Roman officer and Christian martyr who was imprisoned and executed here by spearing around three hundred and six.
