Holy Church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos

The Holy Church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos is a low, unassuming building constructed of mixed stone and brick, topped by a simple wooden gabled roof. Tucked into the narrow, steep streets of the Upper Town, it dates to between thirteen ten and thirteen twenty. While the exterior appears plain, the interior holds one of the most complete and best-preserved sets of Palaiologan-era frescoes in the entire city. These fourteenth-century paintings cover almost every surface, illustrating scenes from the life of Christ and the patron saint himself.
