Vlatadon Monastery

The Vlatadon Monastery sits in the upper town of Thessaloniki, marked by an eight-sided, brick-built dome that rises above the surrounding neighborhood. Founded in the fourteenth century, it is the only Byzantine monastery in the city still operating today. The complex is perched on a hillside with views across the city toward the sea, and its central church, or katholikon, features wall paintings that date back to between thirteen sixty and thirteen eighty.
