Ladadika is a dense grid of two-story brick warehouses and narrow cobblestone alleys located just inland from the passenger port. It takes its name from the Greek word for oil, marking the decades when this district functioned as the city’s primary wholesale market for olive oil, spices, and grains arriving from Mediterranean ports. Because the neighborhood miraculously escaped the Great Fire of nineteen seventeen that leveled most of the lower city, it retains the original architectural character of the nineteenth century.
