Church of Panagia Chalkeon

religious

The Church of Panagia Chalkeon is defined by its exterior of solid brick, a distinct reddish hue that led locals to call it the Red Church. Built in one thousand twenty-eight, the structure sits slightly below the modern street level, a shift caused by centuries of earth deposits accumulating around its base. It is a classic example of Byzantine architecture, featuring a central dome flanked by two smaller ones over the narthex.
