The Church of Prophet Elijah is identifiable by its exterior masonry, which features alternating horizontal courses of light-colored ashlar stone and red brick. This distinct pattern reflects the Constantinopolitan style common during the fourteenth century, the period when this building was constructed. It is the only example of the Athonite architectural type in Thessaloniki, characterized by a cross-in-square plan with semi-circular apses on the north and south sides.
