Pázmány Péter Catholic University holds a unique position in Budapest as a successor to a storied institution founded by Cardinal Péter Pázmány in sixteen thirty-five. While that original university was established in Nagyszombat, its evolution over centuries involved multiple relocations and state interference, particularly during the middle of the twentieth century. In nineteen fifty, the communist government separated the Faculty of Theology from the parent university, which was then renamed Eötvös Loránd University.
