Sibouye Tomb

The tomb of the philologist Sibawayh stands in the historic Sang-e Siah neighborhood of Shiraz. You can identify the site by the foursquare black stone nearby, which lends the surrounding district its name, Sang-e Siah, or Dark Stone. Sibawayh, who died in Shiraz around the year one hundred eighty of the Islamic calendar, remains known for his foundational work in Arabic syntax and morphology. His writings established key linguistic rules that influenced the development of the language for centuries.
