The Arg of Karim Khan is defined by its four fourteen-meter-high circular brick towers, which anchor the corners of a massive, rectangular fortress. Built between seventeen sixty-six and seventeen sixty-seven, this citadel was commissioned by Karim Khan Zand as his primary residence and seat of government after he chose Shiraz as the capital of his kingdom. Its high, thick walls were designed to serve as both a secure military stronghold and an elegant palace for the ruler and his family.
