Valero Square is a public plaza defined by its proximity to the entrance of the Mahane Yehuda Market and the nearby light rail station. The square carries the name of the Valero family, a prominent Sephardic banking dynasty that settled in Jerusalem in the nineteenth century. Jacob Valero, the family patriarch, founded the first modern private bank in the region in eighteen forty-eight.
