Collegiate Church of Saint Mary Magdalene 'Penitente'

The Collegiate Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is recognizable by the vivid dome covered in green and yellow majolica tiles, which rises above the village of Atrani. Beside it stands a five-story bell tower built of gray and brown tuff, with a base of three square levels topped by two octagonal sections. This church was founded in twelve seventy-four on the site of a medieval watchtower. Its construction followed a conflict with Saracen mercenaries sent by Manfred the Norman to punish the people of Atrani for supporting the Pope.
