The Ancient Arsenal of the Republic of Amalfi is identified by two long, parallel stone galleries covered by cross vaults and separated by a series of ten sturdy pillars. Built in the eleventh century, this structure served as the shipyard for the Maritime Republic of Amalfi. Here, laborers constructed and repaired the galleys that carried merchants and soldiers across the Mediterranean, cementing Amalfi’s status as a dominant seafaring power that competed directly with Venice, Pisa, and Genoa.
