Diocesan Museum of Amalfi

The Diocesan Museum of Amalfi occupies the Basilica of the Crucifix, a space marked by its austere medieval stonework and a series of windows that filter light across ancient columns and frescoes. This building, which dates back to at least the year five hundred ninety-six, served as the town’s original cathedral before the neighboring Saint Andrew's Cathedral was constructed in the eleventh century. Over the centuries, the basilica underwent numerous changes, including the demolition of its side aisles to make room for the nearby Cloister of Paradise and the later removal of Baroque plasterwork that had hidden its original medieval form.
