Paradise Cloister

The Paradise Cloister, or Chiostro del Paradiso, is defined by its series of interlaced pointed arches that rest upon one hundred and twenty slender, twinned marble columns. Tucked beside the Amalfi Cathedral, this four-sided portico was built between twelve sixty-six and twelve sixty-eight by Archbishop Filippo Augustariccio. It functioned as a cemetery for the noble families of the city, a purpose reflected in the antique sarcophagi and marble balustrades that remain within the space.
