Shofukuji is recognized as the first Zen temple ever established in Japan. You can identify the site by the large wooden Sanmon gate that stands before a small pond and bridge. Above the gate hangs a plaque with calligraphy by Emperor Go-Toba that identifies the temple as the first of its kind in the country.
