Tochoji Temple is defined by a striking, five-story red pagoda that rises above the surrounding neighborhood buildings. Founded in eight hundred six by the monk Kūkai, also known as Kōbō Daishi, it is the oldest Shingon Buddhist temple on the island of Kyushu. Kūkai established the site after returning from Tang China, naming it with the wish that esoteric Buddhism would spread eastward from Fukuoka.
