Ryuguji Temple is a small site in Hakata marked by its association with a local legend involving a mermaid. Originally located on the beach near Sode-no-Minato port, the temple was renamed to honor the mythical Dragon Palace, or Ryugu-jo, where such creatures were said to dwell. This change occurred after a mermaid reportedly washed ashore in the year twelve twenty-two, an event local tradition interpreted as an auspicious omen for the country’s prosperity.
