The Sahrij Madrasa is identified by the large rectangular water basin that occupies the center of its courtyard. Commissioned in thirteen twenty-one by the Marinid prince Abu al-Hassan, the school was built to provide lodging and instruction for students studying at the nearby Mosque of the Andalusians. It was originally named the Great Madrasa because it surpassed other schools of the era in size, but later became known as the Sahrij—or water basin—Madrasa after its central feature.
