Bab Al Amer stands as a historic gateway to Fes el-Jdid, the royal citadel established by the Marinid dynasty in twelve seventy-six. Its name, which translates to Gate of the Order, is thought to reference the barracks of the sultan's Syrian archer regiments that were once stationed in the nearby district. Originally, the gate marked the southwestern entrance to this new imperial city, sitting along its outer wall near the western edge of what is now the Jewish Mellah.
