Semmarin Medina Gate

Bab Semmarin, the monumental southern gate of Fes el-Jdid, is identified by its sandy-colored rampart towers and distinctive double entrance. Originally established in twelve seventy-six by the Marinid sultan Abu Yusuf Ya'qub, it served as a primary gateway to the newly founded royal capital. Its Arabic name, Bab as-Semmarin, translates as the Gate of the Farriers, a reference to the many farriers who once operated their shops in the immediate vicinity.
