Madeira Lift

The Madeira Lift is defined by its three-stage tower and its pagoda-style roof, topped with a weather vane shaped like a dolphin. Designed by Brighton Borough Surveyor Philip C. Lockwood, the structure opened on May twenty-fourth, eighteen ninety, to carry passengers between the beach-level Madeira Drive and Marine Parade on the cliffs above. It formed a central piece of the larger Madeira Terrace, a massive cast-iron promenade that stretches for eight hundred and sixty-five meters along the seafront.
