The Middle Street Synagogue reveals itself through a west-facing facade of pale Sussex brick, distinguished by its arched windows, red-colored columns, and a large rose window. Designed by the local architect Thomas Lainson and opened in eighteen seventy-five, this structure combines Italian Renaissance and Byzantine Revival styles. It was built during a period of high confidence for the local Jewish community following the formal political emancipation of Jews in eighteen fifty-eight.
