West Pier

The West Pier is a jagged, rusted skeleton of iron rising directly out of the sea. Designed by engineer Eugenius Birch and opened in eighteen sixty-six, it was once a grand destination for Victorian holidaymakers, featuring an oriental-style promenade, an ornamental bandstand, and a concert hall added in nineteen sixteen. During its peak between nineteen eighteen and nineteen nineteen, the pier drew two million visitors.
