Brighton Hippodrome

historic

The Brighton Hippodrome is defined by its circular auditorium, which features a richly decorated ceiling shaped like a panelled tent. Though the exterior on Middle Street appears relatively plain, the interior remains the finest surviving example of a circus-theatre in the country. Originally constructed in eighteen ninety-seven as an ice-skating rink, the building was soon converted by the prominent theatre architect Frank Matcham into a circus, complete with surviving elephant enclosures.
