The Brighton Dome is marked by a massive, circular cupola that spans eighty feet in diameter. When it was completed in eighteen oh eight, this roof of thousands of glass panes made the building the second-largest dome-shaped structure in the country, behind only Saint Paul’s Cathedral. While it stands today as the city’s premier venue for music, theater, and arts, its original purpose was far more utilitarian. The architect William Porden designed the space as a grand stable block for the Prince Regent, who later became King George the Fourth.
