Walker Art Gallery

The Walker Art Gallery occupies a prominent neo-Classical building on William Brown Street, identifiable by its grand exterior and stone facade. Opened in eighteen seventy-seven, it was established by Sir Andrew Barclay Walker, a wealthy local brewer and former mayor of Liverpool. Walker was not a collector of art himself, but he donated twenty thousand pounds to provide a permanent home for the city’s growing art exhibitions, which had previously displaced collections at the local museum.
