St George's Hall

St George’s Hall is defined by its massive scale and imposing neoclassical facade, featuring towering Corinthian columns that overlook the city center. Built between eighteen forty-one and eighteen fifty-four, this limestone structure was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes to consolidate two separate public needs: a grand venue for music festivals and a permanent home for the city’s law courts. The building houses over thirty thousand hand-laid Minton tiles in its Great Hall and was famously outfitted with one of the world’s first integrated systems for heating and cooling, a feat of Victorian engineering designed by Doctor David Boswell Reid.
