The Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building is easily identified by its red brick facade and the classical portico at its entrance, which features four cast iron columns supporting a stone cornice and frieze. Originally constructed in eighteen forty-seven as the Dock Traffic Office, it served as the bustling operational hub for the Royal Albert Dock. Within its central hall, customs officials managed the complex trade activities of the port, while apartments for dock staff were later incorporated into the upper floors.
