Canning Dock

Canning Dock is defined by two eighteenth-century dry docks—also known as graving docks—which remain the oldest visible sections of the entire Liverpool waterfront. These stone-lined basins, built between seventeen sixty-five and seventeen sixty-nine, were once essential for the city’s maritime economy. They allowed ships to be drained of water so workers could scrape hulls, inspect timber for rot, and perform repairs before long voyages.
