The Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is a narrow, brick-vaulted underground cellar on Mathew Street, recognizable by the steep staircase leading down from the pavement into its arched rooms. Opened on January sixteenth, nineteen fifty-seven, it was originally created by Alan Sytner to mimic the jazz cellars he visited in Paris. At its debut, the club enforced a strict jazz-only policy, and the venue’s architecturally distinct low ceilings and dark brickwork were intended to amplify the music in an intimate, basement setting.
