Turf Tavern

The Turf Tavern is identifiable by its location at the end of a narrow, winding alleyway, wedged directly against a surviving section of the medieval city wall. Because the site sits just outside the original boundaries of Oxford, it historically provided a refuge for those looking to escape the strict jurisdiction of local college authorities. Its foundations date back to the thirteenth century, and for much of its existence, it operated as a malt house and a tavern known by its former name, the Spotted Cow.
