The Six Gallery sits at thirty-one nineteen Fillmore Street, occupying what was once an auto repair shop. Founded in nineteen fifty-four by a group of artists and poets from the California School of Fine Arts, this former garage served as a cooperative space for experimental art, theater, and literature. Its founders—Wally Hedrick, Hayward King, Deborah Remington, David Simpson, John Allen Ryan, and Jack Spicer—aimed to create a venue for local work that commercial galleries typically ignored.
