Three thousand one hundred thirty-eight Fillmore Street occupies a quiet corner of the neighborhood, but in the mid-nineteen sixties, this building held the core of a new musical movement. Once a simple pizza parlor, the space was transformed in August nineteen sixty-five into a small nightclub called The Matrix. With a capacity of little more than one hundred people, the room relied on subdued lighting and a tiny, rear-facing stage to create an intimate atmosphere for local performers.
