The New Conservatory Theatre Center occupies the lower level of the building at twenty-five Van Ness Avenue, a site that has housed the organization’s basement theaters since nineteen eighty-four. Founded in nineteen eighty-one by Ed Decker and Sue Lipton, the center began as a small conservatory for youth after the pair departed the American Conservatory Theater.
