The Golden Fire Hydrant

The Golden Fire Hydrant sits on the corner of Twentieth and Church streets, recognizable by its namesake metallic paint. While most of the city’s water system failed during the nineteen oh six earthquake, this hydrant—produced by the Maurice Greenberg and Sons company—continued to provide water. Firefighters used it to protect the surrounding Mission District from the fires that consumed much of San Francisco in the days following the disaster.
