The ornate, free-standing street clock at the corner of Market and New Montgomery Streets is a fixture of the Financial District. This four-faced timepiece, which rises from a decorative base on the sidewalk, has served as a landmark near the Palace Hotel for decades. It is one of the few surviving examples of the grand street clocks that were once common in San Francisco, often installed by jewelers to advertise their services and provide reliable time to passersby in the era before wristwatches became universal.
