Mechanics Monument Plaza

park garden

The Mechanics Monument Plaza is marked by a twenty-one-foot-tall bronze sculpture group created by Douglas Tilden. Completed in nineteen oh one, the monument features five nude figures working a manual punch press to pierce a metal plate. It was commissioned with a twenty-five-thousand-dollar bequest from James Mervyn Donahue to honor his father, Peter Donahue, who founded the first ironworks and machine shop on the Pacific Coast.
