Niantic (whaling vessel)

Beneath the streets of the Financial District, near the intersection of Clay and Sansome, lies the ghost of the Niantic. A square-rigged ship built in eighteen thirty-two for the China trade, she arrived in San Francisco in eighteen forty-nine carrying hundreds of gold-seekers. With her crew and passengers deserting for the gold fields the moment the anchor dropped, the vessel was left hollow and captainless in Yerba Buena Cove.
